Harvey Nichols seems to have gone back to ice age with their 2011 Christmas windows. At first glance this series of windows reminds me of those of Harrods’ Crystal Christmas windows. The use of cheap materials such as cling film, bubble wrap and polystyrene proves otherwise. The look is very artistic and thrown together with an unfinished feel. With the current economic climate in mind, there is no better time to do a Christmas like this.

Whilst some other retailers might be feeling the economic downturn, Harrods have created the ultimate luxury experience this Christmas with Spina Designs. Swarovski crystals decorate each icy forest scene from glistening chandeliers to gingerbread men. They are beautiful.
Just so you know: some of the colours may be different in reality as white balance is an artistic decision says my Photoshop book!

First of all: Merry Christmas everyone! The reoccurring themes this Christmas have been the colour white and snowy scenery, as well as using the colour red. Perhaps the snow we had last year inspired the look of the festive windows this year. And how appropriate it was with all the snow again this winter. Here I look at what the high street retailers created for their shoppers, I say created because most of these windows don’t appear on the streets no more as it is, once again, sale time.
TopShop, Oxford street Christmas windows have a lovely colour scheme of whites, silvers and camels. Brilliantly styled fashion window! Loving the mannequins inside the bauble..
Debenhams, Oxford street would like you to dream of perfect presents. Snow on the ground and large lit snowflakes are the key features in these fashion windows.
Gap, Oxford Street. The white snowy look is contrasted with red glittery presents.

New Look, Oxford Street.
Next, Oxford Street. I like the use of paper snowflakes here. They remind me of my childhood

Selfridges, Oxford St, London
Selfridges windows centre around Christmas top sellers: toys. They delight adults and children alike featuring Barbie and Ken, The Sylvannian families and other top toys. The colourful theme is ‘PLAY’ : the look of the windows is cartoon like pop style with simple line drawing cutouts. Characters Claudius, Rudie and Twinkle Kid appear in them, I shall point them out in the pictures to come. They also make good Christmas baubles so check them out in the Selfridges Christmas shop if you’re feeling playful!
The Oxford Street windows present different takes on Christmas Day. Here we have Barbie and Ken’s Christmas.
Here they are: Claudius on the left and Twinkle Kid on the right. I don’t know who the middle one is. Here is something you might want to know: Claudius is into Tango and speaks many languages, whereas Twinkle Kid is a bit of a fashionista who was once in a band with Miles Davis.
The Orchard Street windows have been designed by artist Pete Fowler who has created a modern family Christmas with characters we all know and love, including the Shoreditch Trendy Dad, the PR Queen Mum and the Brainbox Daughter.

John Lewis welcomes you to attend a winters festival: the scheme is colourful and inspired by Christmas markets. Most of the windows feature colourful disks on the back wall, snow on the ground and colourful stacks of presents. The toy window (below) has a gift unit with present inserts and a revolving skater girl.

I was delighted to find a video by SFD of a making of an animated window for M&S. UK-based SFD prides itself as a key international supplier of inspired retail environments. They were commissioned to design a toy window around the idea of a workshop inspired by Wallace and Grommit and Willy Wonka. With over 50 moving parts they have more than answered the brief.

J.M. Barrie, the creator of iconic story Peter Pan was born 150 years ago, and Harrods are celebrating this with their 2010 Christmas windows. They call it a vintage Christmas and it is luxurious as always. The windows are absolutely beautiful and feature classic scenes and characters from the story. To go with this years theme they stock a Peter Pan Collection, which includes Christmas decorations and gifts.
In the story Peter Pan refuses to grow up and flies off to Neverland, makes friends with Tinkerbell, the fairy, mermaids and Indians.
Peter is the leader of his gang The Lost Boys. In this adaptation of the story Peter’s outfit is made out of autumn coloured feathers.
Obviously in the story Peter can fly. I love this miniature London. The whole window looks magical.

Liberty of London, Great Marlborough St, London
It is the time for my first Christmas post. Liberty’s christmas scheme centres around wildlife and celebrates the nature. The mood is magical yet quite dark. It is calming to see something inspired by nature at the most commercial time in retail. What is interesting is that the scheme is not wintery at all.
The back walls are covered with blue, green and other earthy coloured glitter material. It is not apparent in the photos but colourful fairy lights are placed on the ceiling. Frogs, caterpillars and butterflies run free… I love the mannequins’ styling. Some of the windows happen in a forest and some are water scenes. The merchandise is a mix of fashion, home wares and other gifts.
I love this caterpillar doll. Very clever!
This tree is covered with Liberty fabrics, and the accessories are displayed on little floating shelves.

Harrods celebrates the 70th anniversary of the classic children’s story The Wizard of OZ. In the story a young girl called Dorothy dreams that she, her dog Toto and her farmhouse get transported to the magical land of OZ. The story follows her journey to The Emerald City to meet The Wizard of OZ who can return her back home. Famous characters such as The Wicked Witch of the West, Tin Man and Scarecrow are all featured in the windows.

All the side windows are a lot simpler with green light curtain and in this one it’s the Tin Man.
This is my last Christmas post. Next thing on the agenda is sale. So I will be seeing red for the next two weeks, then can’t wait for spring windows.

The Harvey Nichols Christmas windows this year are absolutely beautiful. They are inspired by the illustrations of Erte and the grand and decorative art movement Rococo. They take you to a girly fantasy land that plays with scale and traditional ideas of function, and is filled with feathers, glitter, butterflies and showgirls.
I wanted to start with this window because it is simply amazing. The silver mannequin figure (reminds me of sci-fi films) is swinging from a giant crystal chandelier. If you look closely; also candles, cutlery, wine glasses, keys are thrown into the chandelier and the table behind it that is made out of mirror pieces. The mirror pieces are also stuck on to the mannequin, as well as lace- like tattoo and gorgeous jewellery.
